Michael received his BA and MA in English from Dalhousie University and PhD in English from the University of Alberta. He has taught a range of literature and professional writing courses at the University of Alberta and publishes regularly on American literature, especially law and literature, in peer-reviewed journals and essay collections.
Michael is the co-author and co-editor of the successful Canadian textbook Acting on Words: An Integrated Rhetoric, Research Guide, Reader, and Handbook, 3rd ed. (Pearson, 2004, 2009, 2012).
Over the years, he has won a Dalhousie graduate fellowship, a University of Alberta Faculty of Arts award for excellence in undergraduate teaching, a Canadian Research Chair post-doctoral fellowship, and several travel awards for conference papers.
Michael has a significant amount of editing experience, having worked for four years as a graduate writing advisor at University of Alberta, consulting with PhD students, post-doctoral fellows, and professors from a broad range of departments and faculties.
He served on the board of directors of the Edmonton Film Society and currently serves on the board of directors of the Project for Adult Literacy Society, which recently won Canada’s Premiers’ Council of the Federation Literacy Award (2019).
