Pandemics and Society webinar series beginning February 10, 2022

One Society Network webinar series explores dynamics between pandemics and diverse aspects of society.

The One Society Network (OSN) www.onesocietynetwork.ca is offering introductory seminars, beginning February 20th, 2022  that give an overview of the dynamic connections between pandemics, like COVID-19, and diverse aspects of society. These seminars will explore the comprehensive impacts of pandemics and pandemic response on some key sectors of the economy and population subgroups, including the environment, education, agriculture and marginalized populations, among others.

The first online seminar will be a presentation on: “Modelling the Economic Impacts of Policy Responses to Pandemic”.  The presenters will be Huw Lloyd-Ellis, PhD. Professor in the Department of Economics, Queen’s University; and Frédéric Tremblay, PhD. NSERC and One Society Network Post-Doctoral Fellow in the Department of Economics, Queen’s University. The seminar will discuss the ongoing need for estimates of the economic costs of pandemics to inform real-time policy choices for Canadian provinces. The complex impacts of COVID-19, and the policy responses to it, present significant challenges to economic modelling. The practical applicability of existing approaches in this context are often limited due to their inflexibility, long-term perspective, lack of regional focus and/or lags in data availability. The seminar will present a prototype framework to address these challenges.
