Message from the IHE Regarding Dr. Richard Fedorak

It is with great sadness that the IHE learned of the passing of Dr. Richard Fedorak, and we offer our deepest condolences to his family as well as to members of the University of Alberta Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry.

We at the IHE have had the sincere pleasure of working with Dr. Fedorak as a member of our Board of Directors for almost four years,” said Dr. McCabe, the IHE’s CEO and Executive Director. “He will be remembered for his leadership as well as for the respect and kindness with which he treated all who he met. Dr. Fedorak will be greatly missed.

Dr. Fedorak was recognized as an exceptional academic, outstanding clinician, and tireless mentor. As Dean of the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Alberta, he was held in high esteem by both students and colleagues. His academic career included over 500 peer-reviewed manuscripts and chapters, as well as appointments as fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in Edinburgh, the Royal College of Physicians in London, the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences, and the Royal Society of Canada. Dr. Fedorak also provided strong leadership for a wide range of initiatives, including co-founding Metabolomic Technologies Inc (MTI), a University of Alberta spin-off company that developed a non-invasive test to test for detecting colorectal polyps and cancer.

It is with great sadness that we learned of Dr. Fedorak’s passing,” said Dr. Paul Armstrong, Chair of the IHE Board of Directors. “The medical, academic and community at large has lost an extraordinary and inspired leader and true friend. His legacy of excellence and innovation will continue to contribute to the advancement of heath care and science in the future. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time.

On November 16, 2018, an open house will be held for family, friends, patients, and colleagues of Dr. Fedorak at the Edmonton Golf and Country Club’s Ramsey Room from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations may be made to the University of Alberta for the Dr. Richard Fedorak Memorial Fund online at ualberta.ca/medicine/giving, or by mail at 2J2.00 WC Mackenzie Health Sciences Centre, 8440-112 St NW, Edmonton, Alberta T6G 2B7.
