NOAHE Rounds III Session 5: Factors influencing specialist physicians’ payment model preferences
This presentation will focus on the findings from a qualitative study that investigated factors influencing specialist physicians’ preferences for either fee for service or a salary-based payment model, and specialist physician’s perspective on how to optimize current specialist payment models in Alberta. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews using an interview guide that was piloted. Over 30 Specialist physicians across Alberta were interviewed. Participants were identified through a snowballing approach using the Physician Payment Advisory group to identify potential participants. Findings presented will include different physician characteristics and values that influence their payment model preferences. The presentation will also highlight emergent themes such as accountability mechanisms and blended payment model options to optimize current payment models that will be attractive to physicians and better support care for patients.
