The Institute of Health Economics (IHE) is an independent, not-for-profit organization with key competencies in health economics and decision analytic modelling, health technology assessment, and knowledge transfer/exchange. The Institute of Health Economics:

  • Is a member of the International Network of Agencies for Health Technology Assessment (INAHTA).

The IHE is recruiting up to two (2) candidates for a twelve (12) training position, with strong potential for employment after the training period. The candidates will be trained to design and conduct model-based economic evaluations of emerging, generally pre-market health care technologies (e.g., medical devices, digital tools). For early innovators, economic analysis will support with an understanding of the commercial potential of technology, considering the headroom available for innovation, and the likely ability for technology to provide sufficient value to be attractive to payers. This can inform decisions within the R&D program, for example go/no go, patient cohorts or aspects of the value proposition of focus, place of technology in care pathways, and the most appropriate end users. For more mature innovators, the analyses conducted will generate economic evidence to describe whether the technology is cost-effective and a good use of health system resources, and therefore may support technology trial or procurement.

The successful candidate will be part of a unique research program supportive of the Canadian life sciences start-up community, providing critical insights to foster innovation. The candidate will be supported by a strong team including Senior Health Economists, Junior Economic Modelers, Project Coordinators, Evidence Synthesis Specialists, and Research Librarians.

Training and Activities:

Candidates will be trained on, and will complete projects, that will include the following:

  • Development and parameterization of robust economic models that evaluate the potential cost-effectiveness of new life sciences technology, considering the perspective of the healthcare payer. 
  • Literature review and critical appraisal 
  • Consultation with key experts for model and parameter validation, and for data collection that can inform modeling
  • Client interface to support the initiation, completion, and presentation of economic analyses


The ideal candidate would possess the following qualifications:

  • A graduate degree in Economics, and/ or Health Economics. Other degrees with strong mathematical modelling / statistical content will also be considered.
  • A strong interest in working with the life sciences start-up community, developing new technologies for health care applications.
  • A strong interest in economic modelling and health technology assessment, including the use of software such as TreeAge, MATLAB or R
  • Strong Project management skills
  • Excellent writing, communication, interpersonal, and critical thinking skills.
