The main source for this article is the 2003 Canadian Community Health Survey Cycle 2.1. The target population is all household residents aged 12 and older living in private occupied dwellings in all provinces and territories, except for Indian Reserves, Canadian Forces bases, and some remote areas. In all, 134,072 households were sampled. For this article, persons aged 50 to 69 were selected.
Individuals were categorized as working if they worked all or part of the previous year, not working for health reasons if they didn't work at all during the previous year and stated that this was because of their own illness or disability or they were permanently unable to work, or not working for other reasons.
