- Dr. Jeff Johnson

Dr. Jeff Johnson is Chair of the Alliance for Canadian Health Outcomes Research in Diabetes (ACHORD), a nationally and internationally recognized team in diabetes research.  IHE staff members Stephanie Balko, Sandra Rees, Greg Hugel and Terry Karuri, work with Jeff on the Alberta Diabetes Surveillance System (ADSS) and Alberta's Caring for Diabetes (ABCD) projects, which are partnerships between the Institute of Health Economics/ACHORD and Alberta Health and Wellness.

The ADSS tracks the number of people living with diabetes in Alberta, their related health conditions, and the health services they use, all based on data from Alberta Health and Wellness. This information helps health care providers and policy makers understand the scope of the disease and how to deal with it. The ABCD project aims to improve the quality and efficiency of care for type 2 diabetes, particularly in non-metro areas, through a variety of interventions aimed at primary care settings.

Jeff's additional research and teaching interests are in the measurement of health-related quality of life, economic evaluations, and formulary decision making.  He leads many of the ACHORD research projects including:

  • studies of the measurement of health-related quality of life in diabetes
  • epidemiologic studies of diabetes and major co-morbidities and complications
  • pharmacoepidemiologic studies of drug therapy in diabetes
  • economic analyses of diabetes care
  • evaluating alternative delivery strategies to improve the quality of diabetes care
  • the impact of the pharmacist on health outcomes and satisfaction of patients with diabetes and other chronic medical conditions
