Dr. Egon Jonsson

Executive Director and CEO, Institute of Health Economics, Professor, University of Alberta, University of Calgary

Dr. Egon Jonsson is Director and CEO of the Institute of Health Economics, and Professor at the University of Alberta, Public Health Sciences. For 20 years he was a professor of Health Economics at the Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, Sweden.

Dr. Jonsson was trained at the Stockholm School of Economics, and at Harvard School of Public Health in the U.S. He is a member of the US National Academy of Sciences, and Editor of the International Journal of Technology Assessment in Health Care (Cambridge University Press).

For many years he was Director of the Swedish Council on Health Technology Assessment (SBU). He later worked for WHO Euro to establish its Health Evidence Network (HEN), which is a service for the health ministries of its member states. More recently he was a Health Policy Advisor at the Ministry of Health in Hanoi, Vietnam. His activities as advisor to the Ministry included issues in health policy development, health care financing, health insurance, and in prevention and public health.

His main fields of research have been in health economics: cost-effectiveness analysis and health technology assessment.
